Amar Mukunda
for State Senate District 39
Amar Mukunda is a remarkable person. As an entrepreneur he created and sold two companies. As a conflict mediator he initiates interfaith dialogues, and he helped build Roca, a nonprofit organization that works with young people at the center of urban violence, into a large community-based gun violence and addiction prevention program. Amar Mukunda’s solution to traffic congestion on I-270 is dramatic investments in public transportation such as Metro and rail. He also champions creation of clean energy opportunity zones to accelerate decarbonization and create a new base of local employment.
It’s Time for a New State Senator!
The current state senator in district 39 blocked important legislation supported by the Sierra Club. We are confident that Amar Mukunda will be a much stronger advocate for the environment.

Katie Clendaniel
for State Senate District 37
Katie Clendaniel is a nonprofit leader who has worked to strengthen local communities by advancing downtown revitalization and housing, supporting small businesses and partnerships, and moving infrastructure and community projects forward. She wants to bridge the gap between climate change, environmental resiliency, and infrastructure investment. Katie is committed to addressing key environmental issues facing the Eastern Shore, including the health of the bay and building long-term environmental resilience among local communities.
It’s Time for a New State Senator!
The current state senator in district 37 has voted for only 24% of legislation important for the environment, and sponsored a bill to end federal oyster restoration that is important for the Chesapeake Bay. The Sierra Club is confident that Katie Clendaniel will be a much stronger advocate for the environment.

Josh Hastings
for State Delegate District 38B
Josh Hastings is an elected member of the Wicomico County Council, where he has championed a new county water/sewer master plan, dramatic upgrades of county parks and recreation, and addressing invasive plant species. Josh has also been a longtime leader of Partners for Open Space, a statewide coalition that advocates for land preservation. He has also served as executive director of Forever Maryland, a statewide nonprofit supporting conservation of forests, farms, parks, and critical habitat. In 2023 he received the prestigious Maryland Sustainable Growth Award – in “Leadership and Service." Josh is a dedicated advocate for clean water, productive working landscapes, and thriving ecosystems.

The current state delegate in district 38B has cosponsored legislation to repeal existing environmental protections. The Sierra Club is confident that Josh Hastings will be a much stronger advocate for the environment.
Josh Hasting is also endorsed by the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, Third Act Maryland, and the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) Action Fund.

Matt Johnston
for State Delegate District 30B
Matt Johnston is an outstanding advocate for the environment. As Anne Arundel County’ first Environmental Policy Director, Matt wrote Anne Arundel County’s Forest Conservation Ordinance, safeguarding countless acres of forest from being bulldozed. He authored the County’s greenways plan to preserve thousands of acres of open space and repeatedly took on developers who tried to “upzone” and pave over rural land. Matt is currently Executive Director of the Arundel Rivers Federation, which heals and protects the the South, West, and Rhode Rivers and champions clean water statewide

Shawn McIntosh
for Baltimore County Council District 5
Shawn McIntosh has a background in public health advocacy, which informs her dedication to protect our water resources, clean air and water, and the strong environmental infrastructure that supports healthy communities. She was drawn into politics by her deep concern over the Maryland Piedmont Reliability Project (MPRP). Her advocacy has grown into a campaign focused on local issues including opposition to MPRP and hyperscale data centers, protecting rural natural resources and farming, and growing responsibly and affordably with adequate infrastructure.
Shawn’s opponent voted against the environment 93% of the time while he was a state delegate, including voting against a law that strengthened the ability of land trusts to protect land from overdevelopment. The Sierra Club is confident that Shawn McIntosh will be a much stronger advocate for the environment.
The Election is November 3 - You Can Vote Now
Voting by Mail
Maryland Boards of Elections have already mailed ballots to voters who requested them. Any registered voter can still go online here to make a Mail-in Ballot Request, even as late as October 27. Completed mail-in ballots can be mailed back to the Board of Elections or placed in a secure drop box in your county. Delivering your ballot to a drop box will eliminate any delays or uncertainties about the U.S. Postal Service. A list of drop box locations is here.
Voting in Person
Early Voting centers will be open from 7am to 8pm October 22-29. You can vote at any Early Voting center in the county where you are registered to vote. A list of Early Voting centers is here (aqui).
On Tuesday November 3 local precincts will be open for voting from 7am to 8pm. Locate your assigned polling place here. If you are in line by 8pm you will be able to vote.

Voting by Mail
If you received a mail ballot, mark your choices and either mail the envelope by Saturday (to make sure USPS will apply the postmark before Tuesday) or put it in one of your county’s drop boxes. A list of drop box locations is here.
Voting in Person
On Tuesday local precincts will be open for voting from 7am to 8pm. Locate your assigned polling place here. If you are in line by 8pm you will be able to vote.
